Orange County Succulent Garden

Set against the beautiful mountain views of Orange County, this garden was designed to create a landscape that feels both dramatic and completely at home in its Southern California setting.

The design is built around a diverse collection of agaves, aloes, yuccas, cacti, and other sculptural succulents, carefully arranged to create layers of contrasting forms, colors, and textures. Large architectural specimens provide strong focal points, while golden barrel cacti, colorful aloes, echeverias, and smaller succulents bring repetition and detail throughout the garden.

Natural stone plays an equally important role in the landscape. Large character boulders, cobble, and contrasting gravel topdressings weave through the plantings, creating the feeling of a natural desert wash while helping visually connect the different areas of the property. The existing concrete and brick walkways provide structure and lead you through the garden, allowing the landscape to be experienced from a variety of angles.

One of our favorite aspects of this project is how the garden interacts with its surroundings. The bold, sculptural plant material frames distant views of the mountains, while the warm tones of the stone complement the home’s architecture and surrounding landscape. As the sun moves across the property, the plants cast dramatic shadows and highlight the incredible forms and textures that make succulents so unique.

The finished garden is water-wise, low-maintenance, and distinctly Southern Californian—but it is also a collector’s garden filled with interesting plants and unexpected details. From broad views across the landscape to small combinations of stone, cactus, and succulents tucked along the walkways, there is something new to discover throughout the property.

This project is a great example of how a drought-tolerant landscape can be lush, colorful, sophisticated, and full of character without relying on a traditional lawn or high-water planting.
